Channels are created to inform and communicate with employees within a company, department, or team. Any channel participant can initiate a conversation, read messages from colleagues and write comments.
When you open the Messages section, on the left you see a list of your active channels. The channel name always starts with a hash #.
How to write in a channel
To send a new message to a channel, go to its page. To do this, click on the channel name in the Activity Stream or in the channel list.
On the channel page, in the upper right corner, click on the Write button.
In the pop-up window, enter the subject and text of the message. If necessary, add a file to the message. To do this, click on the paperclip icon in the field for the message and select the file. Or simply drag the file from your computer to the pop-up window.
Sometimes it is very important to make sure that certain colleagues read a message. In this case, use @mentions to add the name of a specific user to the message text.
@Mentions in channels work in the same way as in the Activity stream and chat rooms. You can learn more about this feature in this article.
How do participants learn about new posts in channels?
Participants can learn about new messages in several ways:
- A pop-up appears in the lower right corner of the screen every time someone writes a new post or leaves comments in the channel.
- On the main page. A red circle with a number inside next to Messages, lets you know that someone wrote in the channel.
Tip: This counter does not show the total number of new messages, but the number of chats or channels with new posts.
- A letter icon in the upper right corner of any system page. If a new message appears in the channel or chat, the user will see a red circle with a number next to this icon. As in the previous case, this counter indicates the number of channels or chats with unread posts but not the number of new messages.
- Next to the channel name in the Messages section. Here the red circle shows the number of unread messages in the channel.
You can change notifications settings for each channel. If you don't want to be disturbed by the pop-up notifications, you can turn them off. To do this, on the channel page, in the upper right corner, click on the horn icon.
If your colleague addresses you in a message or comment using the @mention feature, you will receive a pop-up notification, even in silent mode.
Tasks and comments
In the channels, as well as in the #Activity Stream, you can comment messages and quickly assign tasks to colleagues.
Here we describe in detail how to do it.
To quickly find a channel, use the search bar at the top of the Messages section. Enter the first few letters of the channel name and click on the channel name that appears below the search bar.
To view a list of all channels, click the hash sign in the right corner of the search bar.
